Instead of being decked out in ski boots, snowboard jackets and thermal leggings, they were in Jimmy Choos, Armani tuxedos, spanx and courtier gowns sparkling with Judith Leiber purses, diamonds galore and false eyelashes.

Thanks to 2017 Crystal Charity Ball Chair Pam Perella’s “An Evening In The Alps,” her committee and event producer Tom Addis, the occasion was the perfect setting for this stellar gathering of high rollers in support of the multi-million dollar fundraiser for children’s charities. Ah, shoot! This crowd could send Coco Chanel into orbit over polyester.

Ability Connection’s 10th Annual Vine And Dine Delighted Guests With Fine Cuisine, Success Stories And A Paddle Battle In The Live Auction

With Thanksgiving just a week away, Neiman Marcus Downtown came alive after-store hours on Thursday, November 16, for the 10th Annual Vine and Dine benefiting the Ability Connection. From cocktails on the ground level to a three-course seated dinner in the Zodiac Room, the evening was a feast for the gourmets. In addition to clients charming and delighting guests with their success stories, a bidding war arose during the live auction for a culinary package designed by NM VP Corporate Food Services Kevin Garvin. Here’s a report from the field:

Neiman Marcus Downtown*

An annual November favorite, the who’s who of Dallas gathered at Neiman Marcus Downtown’s elegant Zodiac Room for Ability Connection’s 10th Annual Vine and Dine gala. For the past decade, every November the most prominent of Dallasites fill The Zodiac Room in order to wine and dine in support of children and adults with special needs.

Guest drank the most decadent of wine and bid on the most dazzling of items at Ability Connection’s annual Vine and Dine gala at Neiman Marcus.

Amongst the haute couture and glistening jewelry, guests enjoyed cocktails and company as they perused the items available for silent auction. Cosmopolitans, sauvignon blanc and cabernet circled across the entrance of the flagship store as Ability Connection clients greeted the eager attendees.

Guests moved upstairs after a cocktail hour of anticipation, to the adorned Zodiac Room for a seated dinner prepared by Neiman’s Executive Chef David Crow that included a first course (Fresh ricotta ravioli, eggplant caponata, pine nuts, Parmesan, pomodoro and crispy artichokes), second course (Filet mignon, wild mushroom and autumn vegetables, parsnip, mashed potato, caramelized shallot demi-glace) and dessert (White chocolate dried cherry bread pudding, cinnamon gelato and kanlua sauce) with wines from Coquerel Vineyards.

President and CEO Troy Greisen took a few minutes to thank the Ability Connection board, who supported the event, as well as Neiman Marcus and the Woodworths. His Co-MC Jay Williams, a client of Ability Connection dazzled the crowd with his charming jokes and wit, as the two welcomed the guests and introduced the special speakers for the night.

Shawn Robinette, another client of Ability Connection spoke about how the organization assisted him in finding a job as a dishwasher at St. Marc’s school [sic] St. Mark’s School of Texas, and helped him work towards his goal of achieving independence. Soon after, Nina Shultz spoke about her experience with the organization that was critical in her pursuit of inclusion. The client stories touched the hearts of the attendees and reminded everyone that the night was also to celebrate individuals of all abilities. Debbie Francis shared a powerful message as she shared stories of her son, Bo Francis, and her family’s connection to the cause of the night.

Auctioneer Adam Williams of Heritage Auctions truly put on a show as he presented the items available for bidding. Jane Corbellini and Don Laidlaw engaged in a bidding war over the Kevin Garvin culinary package, only for the two of them to walk away victorious as Neiman Marcus spontaneously donated two for the night. Among the items available for bidding were one of Susan Palma’s legendary needlepoint belts, pet portraits painted by the renowned Jane Corbellini, and an extraordinary piece by global artist Christopher Martin.

Attendees were completely surprised by the final auction item available for bidding- a true original made by the students of Ability Connection’s Life Change program. A series of three canvas paintings inspired by Jackson Pollock, the masterpieces were purchased by The Sheehans of The Moss Foundation, and generously donated to Becky’s House, an Ability Connection home.

As the night closed out, attendees walked out with keys in their hands, not only to the doors of their homes, but the keys to life change.

Harlan Crow Library Dazzled CCB Circle Of Angels Guests With Its Amazing Collection Including A Stradivarius And Lincoln’s Senate Desk

Despite a record-breaking 94-degree temperature, the Crystal Charity Ball Circle of Angels dinner was as cool as the caviar that was served with the first course on Thursday, November 2.

Earlier organizers had worried. Was their concern, “What if you gave a party and no one came”?

Au contraire. Their problem was that Kathy and Harlan Crow’s Library could seat about 100 for dinner, and 124 RSVPs of Dallas most glamorous had checked the “accept” box on the reply cards. But thanks to the CCB space engineer and event chair Rachael Dedman, all fit. From tables of ten to the more intimate tables in the library’s alcoves, it was a one-night-only dining experience, all underwritten by Deloitte.

But before Cassandra‘s first course of baby greens, Madeira port poached pear, goat cheese, celery and honey pearls was even presented, guests like Laura and Jason Downing, Christina and Christopher Durovich, Caren and Pete Kline, Liat and Amit Berger, Marilyn Augur with Margaret and Barry Hancock, Julie Ford with Tucker and Rich Enthoven, Jennifer and Richard Dix, Pat and Charles McEvoy, Patti Flowers and Tom Swiley, Courtney Wang and Lori Barber checked out the wonders of the library. One guest wondered why the Lee Park statue hadn’t found a home at the estate. Another pointed out in amazement the death mask of a past president. Still another guest discovered Abraham Lincoln’s desk when he was a senator. Others just eyeballed the thousands of books. This institution is one that never gets old and always impresses.

Alas, the hosting Crows were not around to accept accolades. Kathy was still mending from a car accident and Harlan was elsewhere.

But not to worry. The talk among the crowd kept things interesting from soup to nuts. Cliff Fischer, who was making his first trip to the Crow Library, was just back from a business trip to India… CCB Chair Pam Perella , who was in a Zac Posen, told a friend, “I wish the days would stretch out a little more, so I could enjoy the moment”…Ben Lange told Annette Simmons how her late husband Harold Simmons had backed his company in the early days… Robin Robinson was still receiving kudos about the Celebrating Women Luncheon with Jamie Lee Curtis… Pianist Tommy deSalvo was in seventh heaven playing the magnificent Steinway concert piano with a legendary Stradivarius safely in a glass case on the wall over his shoulder…

Gingerbread Stroll Returns To HP Village For Viewing And Bidding Thru December 1 For Clayton Dabney Foundation For Kids With Cancer

Yum! The holidays are just brimming with sugary delights and Highland Park Village will be a sweet-tooth stroller’s delight thanks to real estate sweetie Christine McKenny and Event Advisor Lynn McBee, the 5th Annual Gingerbread Stroll will be delighting all from Friday, November 17, through Friday, December 1.

This year’s gingerbread house displays will benefit Clayton Dabney Foundation for Kids with Cancer with 100% proceeds going to the nonprofits.

According to Christine, “The Gingerbread Stroll has become a wonderful tradition during the most wonderful time of the year. People of all ages gather with their family and friends to attend, and it’s always exciting to see how the chefs express themselves creatively. Everyone loves a gingerbread house!”

This year’s culinary architects will include Bird Bakery, Architecture Demarest, Chocolate Secrets, Hilton Anatole, Hotel Crescent Court, Hyatt Regency at Reunion, Omni Dallas Hotel, Charlie’s Pastry Chef Winter Lockwood-Frank and Pastry Works’ Pastry Chef Arielle Sutcliffe.

Well known for delicious abodes, Allie Beth Allman and Associates will be the presenting sponsor.

It’s free for the walking and viewing. But to help raise the funds, all can bid on the gingerbread homes via the silent auction. And there will be giveaway prizes, including a holiday carriage ride for six by Threejays Carriages.

Animal-Loving Karen And Jeff Banister Step Up To The Plate As Honorary Co-Chairs For Operation Kindness’ 25th Annual Canines, Cats And Cabernet

Texas Rangers General Manager Jeff Banister is a familiar name in the sports pages and on the evening news. But what some might not know is that he and his wife Karen Banister have two kids, Alexandra and Jacob, two Labradors (Bella and Scout) and two Maltese (Gracie and Cooper).  

Since the baseball season ended last month, the folks at Operation Kindness took advantage of the pooch-loving Banisters’ down time and arranged to have them serve as the honorary co-chairs for its 25th Annual Canines, Cats and Cabernet at the Omni Dallas on Saturday.

According to Operation Kindness CEO Jim Hanophy, “Canines, Cats and Cabernet gets bigger and better every year, and we are honored to celebrate our 25th anniversary of this event with Jeff and Karen Banister. We know that with their support we will be able to knock this year’s event out of the park.”

But the Banisters aren’t the only ones cheerleading for the organization. Operation Kindness supporter Nelda Cain got involved with the no-kill shelter through her friend/OK Board Chair Kathy Kinser. As Nelda explained, “I have loved getting to know the powers that be at Operation Kindness and feel my efforts are entirely worth it. It is the oldest no-kill shelter in Dallas and serves the entire county including Fort Worth. It is also amazing what a following the organization has attracted, as the work is needed and successful.”

One of the highlights will be the furry guests of honor that have loved staying at Operation Kindness, but would love to find permanent homes.

The Hope Supply Co. Teddy Bear Was Parked Out Front Greeting Supply Hope Guests

It may have seemed like the Hope Supply Co. team was taking the night off on Thursday, October 19, to party the night away. Actually, they were raising funds to provide homeless children with supplies at their 3rd Annual Supply Hope party with the Hope Supply Co. truck parked out front of Heather and Robert Murphy‘s home. Here’s a report from the field:

On Thursday, October 19, Hope Supply Co. hosted its third annual Supply Hope! fundraising event to continue awareness of its mission of meeting the critical needs of homeless children in North Texas. 

150 guests attended Supply Hope! at Heather and Robert Murphy’s home. Guests dressed in casual, uniquely Texan attire, enjoyed Southwestern food from Mexico Lindo food truck, appetizers donated by Chili’s Restaurant, cocktails and desserts donated by Norma’s Café and Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Guests were treated to an exciting live auction featuring a trip for eight in a private jet to a destination of the winner’s choice, box seats for 4 to the upcoming Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles game and a weekend for four at Lajitas Golf Resort near Big Bend.

More than $80,000 was raised from the live auction, sponsorships and admission tickets.

According to Barbara, “95% of the funds raised from Supply Hope! go directly toward programs for homeless children. These funds will be used to purchase much needed critical items for homeless children such as diapers, hygiene, school supplies and toys. We will also be able to continue our quality recreation activities to get them out of their homeless shelters. Although we focus on North Texas, this year we were proud to be involved in hurricane relief, and sent over $400,000 worth of critical items to Houston for Harvey victims. We want to help wherever we can.”

The Statler’s Justo Blanco Reveals The Menu For ReuNight

ReuNight Co-Chairs Jennifer Dix and Kristi Hoyl flew back to Dallas from business meetings to go over the menu for The Family Place fundraiser with The Statler Director of Events and In-Room Dining Justo Blanco. Good thing! Because the event is nearing sold-out status and this crowd is expecting a fine meal on Wednesday, November 8, at the newly reopened Statler.

The edibles for the evening’s activities will start around the pool with smoked brisket cones with cheddar grits and scallions, seared lentil cake with tomato jam and shrimp cocktail fork with Texas citrus and mint. For beverages, Justo has arranged for a cocktail cart with Manhattans as well as trays of glasses of wine and champagne passed out.

Then guests will move upstairs to the Grand Ballroom for a three-course feast starting off with golden beet salad with roasted baby turnips, pickled carrots and pecan crumble. That will be followed by the entree of pork belly and sea scallop duet with parsnip puree, charred Brussels sprouts and citrus confit. To complete the dinner will be Parisian opera cake with coffee buttercream and gold leaf.  Of course, wines will be served throughout, as well as bar service.

Park And Palate’s Down To The Roots Turned Klyde Warren Park Into The Ideal Grazing Spot With Boldfacers And Top-Tier Chefs

On the eve of Texas-OU, Park And Palate‘s Down To The Roots at Klyde Warren Park became a splendiferous open-to-the-skies-above cuisine center. So, while Uptown, Greenville Avenue and other party joints were elbow-to-elbow with out of town visitors on Friday, October 13, Klyde Warren had such heavy hitters as SMU’s First Couple Gail and Gerald Turner and Nancy and Randy Best grazing the grounds, thanks to the area’s top chefs led by Chef Dean Fearing. Klyde Warren Park kicked off Park & Palate on Friday, October 13, with Down to the Roots, its VIP celebration for park donors and sponsors. For its signature fundraising event, Klyde Warren Park transformed its normally bustling greenspace into a food-lover’s paradise with plush lounge areas, inviting highboy tables and of course makeshift kitchens for some of the state’s top chefs sprinkling the lawn. Guests like event co-hosts Lyn and John Muse and Carolyn and Rob Walters, Sheila and Jody Grant and Mayor Mike Rawlings enjoyed unique dishes created by top chefs including Dean FearingKent Rathbun, Jason Dady and Jon Bonnell

The evening’s theme was “Pillars and Protégés”, in which well-known pillar chefs selected a friend, co-partner, or up-and-coming protégé to be paired with to create a unique collaborative dish for the night’s tasting. A friendly competition raised the “steaks” for the participating chefs and after a fierce (and filling) competition judges Luke Mathot, Richard Ruskell and Tara Green, president of Klyde Warren Park named Jason Dady and Jeff Bekavac the evening’s winners. The two received a pair of boots from event sponsor Lucchese for their Short Rib Tacos.

While the Blood Orange Margaritas and Jameson Sours flowed, guests enjoyed dessert from Fluff Bake Bar and Chef-host Dean Fearing while they danced to country music artist David Nail.

Insider Tips For Saturday’s 2017 Cattle Baron’s Ball’s “Shooting For The Stars”

If there are some gals MIA today, they’re over at Gilley’s Dallas. No, they’re not line-dancing and bar leaning. They’re in T-shirts, old jeans and sneakers ripping open boxes, schlepping carts around, setting up tables and getting ready for Saturday night’s 2017 Cattle Baron’s Ball. After all, that’s what CBB committee members do the day before the American Cancer Society mega-fundraiser.

While some might think such a gaggle of females would be high drama and round-the-clock temper tantrums, they missed the mark big-time with this bunch. One gal said that everything is so organized that they just might finish earlier than planned. Why, they even had time to have lunch with some of the past CBB chairs like Mary Humphreys Parker, Cindy Stager, Amy Turner, Tia Wynne, Andrea Weber, Olivia Kearney, Kristi Hoyl and Kristin “KJ” Sanger.

When 2017 CBB Co-Chairs Sunie Solomon and Anne Stodghill were asked their secret, they attributed it to their troops like Andrea Nayfa, Nancy Gopez, Kristi Bare, Katy Bock, Wendy Messmann, Karen James, Meaghan O’Leary and others who have been working with color-coded seating charts, spreadsheets and professionalism.

They’ve even arranged for a back-up plan to accommodate Mother Nature’s mood in case she boo-hoos on the festivities. Pat Green will be on the Winston and Strawn LLP Live Auction stage in Gilley’s proper, and Brooks and Dunn will be  on the Andrews Distribution Main Stage in the humongous tent with concrete floor. Even the never-ending grazing will be indoors!

But just in case you want to be in the ultimate know, here are some insider tips to avoid those “Gee, I wished I’d known” or “Wow! I forgot all about that!” moment.

Must Have

  • More important than your cellphone will be your tickets, wristbands and hang-tags, if you’re driving. No guest will be allowed on the premises without them.
  • Also, please don’t forget your favor bag ticket. It’s not required for entrance, but you’ll hate yourself when you aren’t able to get the Hirzel Capital Favor Bag with all the swag as you leave.

Parking is a bit different this year, so be prepared. According to traffic czarina Nancy Gopez, here is the breakdown:

  • Blue hangtags — Arrive and depart in the Gilley’s driveway for valet parking.
  • Gold hangtags — Arrive at the valet parking at Kay Bailey Hutchinson Lot D. Lot opens at 5:30 p.m. Shuttle buses will take guests to the Event Center at Gilley’s Dallas. The last shuttle bus will depart Event Center at 2 a.m.
  • White Hangtag — Self-park at Eddie Deen’s starting at 6:30 p.m. Shuttle buses will take guests to the Event Center at Gilley’s Dallas. The last shuttle bus will depart Event Center at 2 a.m.
  • Limousines — Arrive and pick up at Event Center.
  • Uber, Lyft, Wynne Transportation and other private driving services — Drop off at Gilley’s driveway and pick up at Event Center

Hint: Sunie strongly recommended Ubering.

Flamenco Dancers Kicked Up Their Heels To Benefit Children At Risk’s “A Night In Barcelona” At Hotel Zaza

Evidently Calvert Collins-Bratton and Vince Bratton have some pull with Mother Nature because the evening of Saturday, September 23, was just made for their “A Night in Barcelona” at Hotel Zaza. Benefiting Children at Risk, the festivities started off with a reception around the pool complete with flamenco dancers and then moved indoors for a delicious dinner. Here’s a report from the field:

The evening began with a VIP poolside reception at the always fabulous Hotel Zaza. Chairs Calvert Collins-Bratton and Vince Bratton visited with guests who included Eric and Kate Sudol, former Dallas Cowboy Timmy Newsome, Stratton and Debbie Horres, Richard Collins, Steve Love, Susannah and Chris Watt, Ron Taylor, Michael Zangoei, Shara McClure and couture designer Becky Hollands.

Guests enjoyed the picturesque views of the Uptown Dallas Skyline before moving to the ballroom where they were swept into “A Night in Barcelona.” Guests were dazzled by flamenco dancers, bright colors and tropical breezes. Hosted by Children at Risk, this annual fall soiree benefits the children and families of North Texas.

Once in the ballroom, guests were welcomed by emcee Scott Murray who kept the event lively throughout the evening. As guests dined on grilled hanger steak, shellfish and vegetable paella with baby zucchini, and corn pudding, Children at Risk President and CEO, Dr. Bob Sanborn, and North Texas Managing Director, Dr. Charlotte Carlisle, shared highlights of how the nonprofit works tirelessly to ensure Texas children and families have access to healthy food, quality public education, evidence-based parenting programs and a safe environment free of traffickers.

After a delicious dessert of cinnamon-dusted churro with chocolate dipper and salted caramel pastry cream-filled profiterole and coffee, the Live Auction heated up. The exciting 2018 All-Star Game Package, including tickets to the Slam Dunk and 3-Point Shooting Competitions, and the NBA Legends Brunch, was won by Kyle Jennings; and a Romantic Stay in historic Jefferson, Texas, at the House of the Seasons, one of the Great Homes in Texas, plus dinner at Stillwater Inn and 2 pairs of hand-made slippers from Hadleigh’s, went to Dr. Martin Koonsman. Another big hit was the Aruba Vacation Package which included 5 nights in a beautiful five-bedroom, three-bathroom beachfront home on Malmok, just yards away from one of the most acclaimed snorkeling beaches on the island, and a pair of airline tickets. Pam Humphrey was the lucky winner.

Tom Lewis won the raffle, a 5-day trip to Barcelona, including airfare for two and five nights at the luxurious 5-star Monument Hotel located in the heart of Barcelona on the famed Paseo de Gracia.

The night ended with Dr. Sanborn and Dr. Carlisle thanking the 200 plus stylish guests, and wonderful sponsors and donors for their generosity to Texas children, before inviting everyone to kick up their heals with the Flamenco dancers.

2017 Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala Decorations Revealed Reflecting Maestro Jaap Van Zweden’s Farewell Celebration Season

Event guru Todd Fiscus had just returned from a break in Mexico. The weeks earlier had had him in Sonoma, Calif., and a ranch in Wyoming and everywhere but Mars. But thanks to NDA (non-disclosure agreements), all he could show for his handiwork was a tan.

Before presenting the sneak preview of the 2017 Dallas Symphony Gala lookey-lookey on Tuesday, August 15, at the Meyerson Symphony Center, he did fess up to Culinaire Catering Director Adele Ichilian about the newest event trend — cellphone check-ins. Seems that folks who are hosting big-time weddings, birthdays, whatevers don’t want to be in the swamp of social media. As Todd put it, social media has become the four horsemen of the apocalypse: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and SnapChat.

To solve the problem, Todd has created cellphone cubbyholes like yesteryear’s hotel key cubicles. Guests hand over their phones before entering the event, receive a receipt for the phone, and pick it up when leaving the occasion. While the guest is partying, Todd has arranged for the cellphones to be charged up.

Made sense. Example: For wedding photographers trying to capture the “money shot” of the newlyweds having that first kiss, the main aisle has been filled with guests’ arms stretching out with cellphones to also capture the moment.

But on this night, Todd was laid back in shorts at the Meyerson for the DSO Gala décor presentation for guests including Jana Etheridge, Randall Wilhoit and Katherine and Key Coker.

According to Todd, DSO interim CEO Michelle Miller Burns and  DSO Gala Co-Chairs Lisa and Clay Cooley, there were “still a few tables available” for the Saturday, September 16, Gala, which will launch Farewell Celebration Season for departing  DSO Music Director Jaap Van Zweden, who’s decamping to lead the New York Philharmonic.

Therefore the Gala at the Meyerson will have a sort of “grand finale” look and feel, Todd said, with cool emerald greens (from the table linens to the Elephant ears from Brazil!) and malachite reflected throughout.

Joining Jaap and the DSO musicians will be the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who is always a North Texas music lover’s favorite.

The concert will be preceded by a cocktail reception and seated dinner in the Renaissance Foyer with Honorary Chair Margaret McDermott.

As for the much-anticipated after-party, by contrast, it will be a “fun, sexy version of an after-party,” all aquas and hot pinks with a DJ providing the music.  

Tickets for the season’s first formal gala range from concert-and-after-party tickets to full-blown Gala packages.

 

JUST IN: Art-Loving Rebecca Fletcher To Chair 2018 Art Ball With Theme And Date Already Set

Fess up. You honestly don’t know the difference between an Old World masterpiece and a paint-by-numbers painting. Now, don’t you feel better getting that off your chest? But you do know a real party with gorgeous people, incredible auction items, to-die-for dining and events that everyone is talking about. For instance, at the top of the list — the annual Art Ball.

So, continue with the honesty thinking. There was a time when the Dallas Museum of Art fundraiser was an over-the-top convention of art-hugging folks filling a tent that extended from the DMA to Ross. But last year the Art Ball took a major 90-degree turn. It downsized the guest list and the tent. But it upsized the excitement, the auction items and the OMG you-weren’t-there? factor thanks to Ann and Lee Hobson.

Rebecca Fletcher*

In the crowd was second-generation, art-loving  Rebecca Fletcher. (Her mama and papa, Bess and Ted Enloe, have been Dallas art supporters for decades.) How loving? She was tapped with the 2016 TACA Silver Cup and gave a killer acceptance talk.

But don’t go thinking that Rebecca is a stodgy type. For example, back in 2015 just before the Dallas Theater Center’s Moonshine Gala reception high atop the Wyly Theater, where all the glamour types were being charming, Rebecca’s heel got trapped in between the floor slats and snapped off. A gent pulled the heel out of its predicament and handed it to Rebecca, who pressed slipper and heel together and carried on.

Needless to say, Rebecca knows how to literally pull things off. So, it’s no surprise that she’s just been named to chair the 2018 Art Ball on Saturday, April 21, at the DMA.

The gal has already picked the theme — “Horizon: Now. New. Next.” — as well as the décor, thanks to event planner Todd Fiscus. Rebecca reports that it will “will focus on the DMA’s past and present while looking forward to its future… the event will feature modern, contemporary décor with a sculptural feel. Cascading color from the ceiling will mimic the vibrant horizon and will be reflected throughout in the mirrored décor.”

According to Rebecca, “As a long-time supporter of the Dallas arts community, I am honored to chair the 2018 Art Ball supporting the DMA, and I believe the theme of looking toward the horizon embodies the excitement surrounding the future of the Dallas Museum of Art and the opportunities that await. This year’s theme will bring the horizon to life through various artistic forms to create an event that will be remembered by guests for a lifetime, from live performances to beautiful artwork incorporated in new and exciting ways.”

Start dieting now, because Cassandra will be in the kitchen providing the vittles.

As for the live auction, after-party and other details, wait and see. In the meantime, budget this one on your expense account even if you don’t give a poof about art because you know you love a great party and memory maker.
