OK, so ice challenged the Super Bowl. Rain has tested Cattle Barons time and time again. But today was rain-free and there was absolutely no sign of snow or ice within 500 miles. And yet, Mother Nature once again proved that she rules events in Dallas.
This morning the official kick-off of the Nexus Recovery Center‘s public relations campaign was all arranged. The new look would be unveiled on the billboard at Fitzhugh and Central with Campaign Chair Linda Ivy on a cherry picker doing to honors.
Well, that was the plan until the 25 mph winds blew everything eastward-ho. Why the U.S. flag at the adjoining McDonald got so caught up with the gusts of wind that it literally found itself cocooning its flagpole.
But this situation didn’t daunt Linda one little bit. Her red hair seemed to be windblown in just the right ways. Even when it came to being harnessed into a safety rig, she was like an eager kid at Six Flags. It wasn’t until someone handed her the hardhat that there was just the slightest pause. But even that hesitation got blown to smithereens.
To bolster her courage, she had husband Steve checking on the safety factors on his Linda being elevated to such heights. Still he couldn’t resist the temptation as Linda walked by to reach out for her trailing security rope and stop her in her tracks.
For added support the ladies in red (aka the Mansion Divas) showed up for Linda and were favorites of the photographers.
While the crowd grew, the guys trying to install the new signage were a bit challenged to say the least. At times they looked like they were trying to hang a massive bed sheet on a drying line in West Texas.
But this little wind factor was not going to slow things down. No, siree. At 11:29, Linda in high heels and wearing Nexus blue climbed the ladder to the cherry picker basket along with Nexus Executive Director Becca Crowell and Nexus Board Member Jan Madigan. The contraption lifted them halfway up to the billboard. Using a bullhorn they explained how important the campaign was for Nexus to help those facing recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Much to the relief of those on the ground who were starting to feel a slight wind chill, the words were brief and to the point.
Then the picker eased the trio back on Mother Earth just in time for Linda and her friends in red to head to their monthly lunch at the Mansion.
