Dr. Gail Thomas To Be Les Femmes Du Monde’s “2012 Woman Of The Year”

Just a few days after having $33,365 worth of merchandise pilfered, St. John was filled to the max with clothes and all things nice for the Les Femmes du Monde announcement and kick-off party on June 20. It was all to reveal that Trinity Trust’s Dr. Gail Thomas would be Les Femmes’ 2012 Woman of Year to be honored at a gala dinner on October 9 at Belo Mansion.

Yvonne Crum

The only thing missing was kick-off party co-chair Jill Rowlett. Seems Jill was home in bed with a nasty respiratory infection, so co-chair Yvonne Crum was solo-ing the occasion. Yvonne herself was still recovering from a case of shingles resulting in her extolling the virtues of getting vaccinated against the nasty skin disease. Not only is it a pretty nasty-looking disease, it feels even worse.

But the occasion wasn’t to talk about the ills of the day. It was to start the momentum for the dinner that will benefit Children’s Medical Center‘s The Child Life Program and the International Education Program of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.

Jim Falk

WAC President Jim Falk recalled how Anne Mallon helped found Les Femmes and the early days when the two groups officed in the same building. Back in those days, Les Femmes virtually supported the WAC. As Jim described it, “For a long time, this organization was the backbone of the World Affairs Council.”

Jim then joked that his wife Terrell had decided to attend the party when she learned that it was being held at St. John. Evidently many shared Terrell’s feelings, since it was a standing room only, testing the A/C.

Connie Rhoades

Les Femmes President Connie Rhoades thanked all for coming and St. John GM Petrushka Dickson, who was MIA, and introduced dinner chair Markita Thompson. In brighter-than-bright

Markita Thompson

white suit, Markita admitted, “We had a serious leak. . . Everybody already knows who our honoree is. . . and we are thrilled! She is very reluctant to be honored. She is a Renaissance woman. She is so over-qualified. She’s smart, she’s beautiful, she can talk people into donating money! She is a visionary extraordinaire!”

Connor Thomas, Maggie Thomas, Dr. Gail Thomas, Tori Mannes, Sarah Mannes, Rachel Mannes and Molly Mannes

Whoa! What a build-up! But leave it to Dr. Gail to rise to the occasion graciously and articulately: “I’ve been told not to be honored, because it stops the work. . . And everybody can see that I’ve been working for a long time! One reason I agreed to do it, though, is to open your eyes to what’s happening in downtown Dallas. . . We have a chance to be one of the 21st century cities of the world. The secret is access to nature — trees, fields, bluebonnets, bike trails. . .”

Another secret is having people like Gail hard at work.
