Saturday, May 5: Before the horses have their first bucket of oats at Churchill Downs, Derby Day will be underway at St. Andrew United Methodist Church to benefit Seven Loaves Food Pantry & Community, Plano Children’s Medical Clinic and The West Side Clinic.
Unlike other events taking place on this Saturday, there will be no mint juleps nor dudes in seersucker suits. Rather, the participants will be in running shoes and shorts for a 5K and Fun Run and Festival with NBC5 sports reporter David Watkins as Derby Day grandmaster. But don’t go thinking that a touch of the Kentucky Derby won’t be present. Nope. Everyone is encouraged to wear a great “derby-style” chapeau for the hat contest.
The fun run will allow pooches on leashes and strollers to participate.
And if running (or even walking) isn’t your idea of fun, Event Co-chairs Nancy Frazier and Jane Abigail have arranged for a festival including food, pony rides, bounce castles, petting zoo, face painting, cake walk, games and more.
