GROVEL ALERT: 19th Annual Genesis Family Luncheon

Jan Langbein (FIle photo)

Genesis Family Shelter Executive Wunderkind Jan Langbein reported that the 19th annual luncheon benefiting Genesis at the Hilton Anatole is more or less a done deal.

Well, what would you expect when the headliner is retired General Colin Powell?

Then add in Michelle and John Grimes as event chairs and Marianne and Roger Staubach as honorary chairs.

However, don’t you just know that if you were to make one of those offers that can’t be turned down, Jan herself would haul in another table for the April 26 event.

Dallas International Film Festival Is Revving Up For A Big 10 Days In April With Screenings And Film Greats

With the Dallas International Film Festival in the wings, it was time to gather the troops at Mason Bar Tuesday evening and get the news out about plans for the Dallas Film Society‘s biggie event.

James Faust

DFS Artistic Director James Faust sounded like a spokesperson for international relations as he reeled off just a sampling of the 120+ films from 27 countries that will be screened during the 10-day festival starting April 12.

  • A “centerpiece” film from Korea called “My Way” will be shown on Tuesday, April 17, with a post-screening party at the Crow Museum.
  • Bringing things back to the North Texas neighborhood, a documentary, “American Parking Lot,” will hone in on tailgating at Dallas Cowboys games.
  • To tie in with April 21-22 Earth Day Dallas, a variety of films focusing on the environment will be sponsored by Whole Foods.

The festival’s films will be on screens at the Angelika (Mockingbird Station), Magnolia,  NorthPark, Texas Theatre and Dallas Museum of Art.

In the people department, the 2012 DIFF is dedicated to Tandy and Lee Roy Mitchell, founder of Cinemark Theaters.

Other folks being honored include:

  • 2012 DIFF Shining Star Award — Actress Gabourey Sidibe from “Precious”
  • 2012 DIFF Dallas Star Award — Costume designer Bernie Pollack
  • 2012 Texas Avery Award presented by Reel FX — Walt Disney feature animator Glen Keane

Lynn McBee

Next up was DFS Chairman of the Board Lynn McBee, who insisted on all the DFS staff joining her including DFS President Lee Papert, who said with a smile that he was looking forward to his first DIFF.

Lee Papert

Then James was back with mic in hand to mention that films would be shown marking special anniversaries like:

  • 60th anniversary of “Singing in the Rain”
  • 30th anniversary of “E.T. The Extraterrestrial”
  • 25th anniversary of “ROBOCOP”
  • 20th anniversary of “Aladdin”
  • 15th anniversary of “LA Confidential,” part of Chris Vognar’s “Screening Room” presented by Stella Artois.

Dwight and Claire Emanuelson and Anne and Steve Stodghill

While Gina and Scott Ginsburg had to rush off in their very cool Audi before all the announcements were made, Anne and Steve Stodghill were front and center. The Stodghills reported that they had just bought a new house with plans to move in this summer. With the renovations to the new place and her freshman year as a Cattle Baroness, Anne has  decided to cut down on some of her activities, but you’ll still see her at the DIFF. . . Claire Emanuelson was still all smiles over her best bud Dee Dee Lee making the Ten Best Dressed list earlier in the day.

Melina McKinnon and Michael Cain

Husband Dwight was probably just as happy that Claire was no longer eligible for the list after having been on it for three years. Behind most best-dressed ladies are very supportive husbands. . .  And speaking of the best-dressed newbies, DFS Lynn McBee had just joined the club Tuesday morning. . .  Melina McKinnon and Michael Cain looked like proud parents, having been a part of the DIFF since its infancy.

Be prepared. More news will be coming in the days ahead about films, people and activities. Best thought would be to check out the schedule and get passes now.

BTW, the DIFF website has all the answers for your questions and it’s a snap to maneuver, so no excuses for missing some amazing films.

83rd Linz Award Luncheon Celebrates And Honors Erle Nye With Dallas Leaders And Aggie Escorts And Singing Cadets

Erle Nye

There were a heap of a lot of Aggies in their best dressed uniforms Tuesday at the Hilton Anatole for the 83rd Linz Award luncheon benefiting the Junior League of Dallas. The reason was the honoree/Texas A&M alumnus Erle Nye, who seemed still taken aback by the whole thing.

Jim Moroney and Dr. Gail Thomas

Before the luncheon began, Texas A&M Ross Volunteer honor guards were posted at the reception entrance letting everyone know this was a momentous occasion. Inside, Erle was greeting the likes of Bobby Lyle, Jim Burke and Kelly and Norman Green. Texas Tech board of regents chair Jerry Turner told Erle, “You’re my hero.” Dr. Gail Thomas followed that up with, “I’m so proud of you.” Erle quickly came back with, “The bridge. . . that was the best thing!”

He admitted that he was genuinely surprised and gratified by the honor, the Texas A&M Ross Volunteers participating in the event, and receiving 200 calls, letters and voicemails from people congratulating him on being the 83rd recipient of the prestigious award. “I’ve wanted always to stay active in the community,” Erle says. “This is very helpful, from the point of view that, ‘Maybe you’ve done something worthwhile!’ Dallas is a great community with a special legacy — such a tradition in business, civic activity, religion, doing what’s good for the community.”

Rowland Robinson and Peggy Meyer

But this was only the tip of the Erle celebration. Once inside the Khmer Pavilion, it was a gathering of Dallas eagles from business, government, education, healthcare, arts and philanthropy — Jim Oberwetter, Albert Black, Ron Steinhart, Toni Brinker, Rep. Dan Branch, Lee Jackson, Jennifer Sampson, John Scovell, Jim Moroney, Mike Rawlings, Lee Cullum, Major Charles Ward, Peggy Meyer, Rowland Robinson, Jeremy Strick, Jill Magnuson, Lindalyn Adams, Ruth Altshuler, Dolores Barzune, David Biegler, Tom Dunning, Walt Humann, Ray Hunt, Caren Prothro, John Scovell, William Solomon, Ron Steinhart, Peter Stewart, Robert Thornton III  and last year’s recipient Pete Schenkel, to name just a few.

Alice Nye

When everyone including Alice Nye and the Nye kids and grandkids took their places, still another Aggie surprise took place.  The Texas A&M Singing Cadets sang a selection of tunes including “Texas, Our Texas.” At this point it wouldn’t have been a surprise to have had the Aggie yell leaders lead the room in cheers for Erle. Luncheon chair Lisa Loy Laughlin probably thought that might have been a tad too much.

Texas A&M Singing Cadets

But there was a schedule to keep and words of appreciation to be spoken. As guests ate a luncheon “inspired by” Erle (tortilla soup en croute, adobo chicken and beef kabobs, cheese enchiladas with chipotle cream, poblano corn rice and a trio of tarts), the members of the head table pointed out guests in the audience. Jim Moroney noted two tables of school kids from Hockaday, Cistercian and Townview Magnet schools. No, they weren’t there to skip school. Rather the hope was that this occasion would inspire them to get involved with the community.

Zale Chairman Jack Lowe recognized Zale CEO Theo Killion before introducing Bobby Lyle, who had a daunting task — introducing Erle within a two-minute period. “That’s impossible,” Bobby said. It would be like introducing the newest knight to the Roundtable! Just reading the full-page description of Erle in the program would have taken more than two minutes. But Bobby eloquently summed it up by saying, “At the Salvation Army our brand promise is ‘doing the most good,’ and Erle has spent his entire life doing that.”

In accepting the award, Erle thanked all including emcee Joel Allison, who had nominated Erle. “I could not have been more surprised, because I’m slightly past retirement.”

He went on to say that this had pulled him “back from the cycle of the Who’s. When you retire, you’re in first stage: ‘Who’s Who.’ In a while, it’s ‘who’s that? A little later, ‘who cares?’ I was right between ‘who’s that’ and ‘who cares.’ You pulled me back from that.”

In typical Erle style, he said,

  • “I know most of my [former colleagues] have heard me speak, and yet they came here today anyway!”
  • “One of my heroes Winston Churchill once said, there was never a bad short speech.”
  • “As Henry VII told his many wives, ‘Don’t worry, I won’t keep you too long.”

Then he got down to business, telling of his and Alice’s coming to Dallas after A&M because it was a socially progressive, economically dynamic city. “Dallas is a city that works” was the slogan.

He recalled July 1961 when businesspeople and African Americans integrated 40+ Dallas restaurants. ‘Whites only” signs came down. In September 1961, the first Dallas schools were integrated.

Looking to the future, Erle told how he understood that, like last year’s and this year’s, next year’s United Way Campaign would be led by a Fortune 500 CEO, adding, “That wouldn’t happen in many places; it’s a testament to the commitment in this community.”

He closed by urging the group to “redouble your efforts to deal with unmet needs.”

Grovel Alert: Nasher Salon’s Isabella Rossellini Tickets

According to Nasher Sculpture Center main man Jeremy Strick, the April 10th evening Nasher Salon with Isabella Rossellini is a done deal. You can always try, but . . .

However, NSC Director of External Affairs Jill Magnuson reports that there might be some tickets left for the 3 p.m. conversation with Isabella at Booker T. Washington.

Comment: Every one of the afternoon sessions between the students and the visiting celebrity has been amazing. From Bobby Duvall, Kevin Bacon to Kristin Chenoweth, it’s an amazing opportunity that leaves everyone energized.

JUST IN: Tony Blair Will Headline “A Conversation With A Living Legend”

If you were at the Hilton Anatole today for the Elisa Project luncheon (deets on that will follow in a future post), you might have seen an interesting group sampling all types of yummies with Hilton Anatole Chef Jorge Carvajal making sure they liked what they tasted.

Amanda Bush, Jorge Carvajal and Jan Pickens*

As good as the food was, the group was very interesting. It was made up of Amanda Bush, Jan Pickens and James Munroe to mention just a few.

Richard Branson (File photo)

The reason for the gathering was a tasting for “A Conversation with a Living Legend” on Wednesday, May 9. What’s that? Yes, we just had “a conversation” with Sir Richard Branson in January, but you just can never have too many conversations benefiting MD Anderson Cancer Center and especially with interesting Brits. Besides this date was selected to accommodate the headliner.

And who will this very busy headliner be? The Right Honorable Tony Blair, the former British prime minister who managed to work with royals and American presidents with ease and charm.

Mandi Bush is chairing the event and Jan is on the committee for this 23rd conversation.

This one is going to be a definite sellout, so as soon as tickets go on sale, we’ll let you know.

Dallas Symphony’s Elan Circle Savored The Symphony With Artwork On Violin Fronts And Ladies’ Backs

Saturday night the Adolphus mezzanine was more crowded than the check-out line at Tom Thumbs on Thanksgiving afternoon. Only this jam was a lot better dressed. It was the Elan Circle‘s black-tie Savor the Symphony soiree chaired by too adorable Paige Westhoff  with Jennifer and Coley Clark as honorary chairs. Guess what? Jennifer and Coley will be chairing this year’s DSO gala in September. Speaking of DSO gala, 2011 co-chairs Barbara and Don Daseke , admitted they were taking some time off from fundraising after her gig with Mad Hatter’s in April.

Heidi Lockhart Somes

As for the fashion flair, backs are definitely back. Everywhere you look, you see naked backs. Center of attention on this evening was adorable artist Heidi Lockhart Somes. As oldsters looked in amazement, the younger crowd said when asked about the girl with the amazing tattoo, “Oh, you must be talking about Heidi.” Indeed they were. From the front the adorable artist looked like every mother’s idea of a gorgeous daughter-in-law. But with the massive crane in flight tattoo on her back, she looked like she belonged in the tattoo hall of fame. When asked about her back masterpiece, she smiled and said, “There are two sides of me.” She said she is corporate in the front and tattoo on the back — “a real 180 degrees.”

But Heidi probably won’t be remembered for her tattoo as much as the violin that she painted for the DSO fundraiser. The Oregon native thought “of home when I painted it.” Others had told her that it reminded them of Germany, Eastern Europe and the Champs de Elysse. Heidi suggested that it “really reminds people of home, and I think that’s why it sold.” At the sponsors’ party held earlier, it sold to a lady for $20,000. It’s going to be a surprise birthday gift for her husband, so no names.

Anna Membrino

The whole idea of having celebs like Heidi Lockhart Somes, Nicole LeBlanc, Phil Romano, JD Miller, Rob House, Natasha Hallam, Anna Membrino, Jadz Pate, Lynn Rushton and Susan McWilliams painted the violins came from Elan Circle member Kaycee Holmes‘ mom, Linda Holmes. After seeing how cows were painted in Chicago, Linda came up with the idea of painting violins. that idea resulted in her winning a big national award from the American symphony Orchestra League in 2000. Since then dozens of symphony groups around the country have adopted the idea.

Each of the 10 Dallas violins cost less than $100. After they were stripped of paint, put in denatured alcohol and unstrung, they were handed over to the artists and told, “Do whatever you want.”

Blaine Nelson had his eye on one done by JD Miller saying, “I think it would look good in our house.” Wife Patti didn’t look quite as enthusiastic.

JD Miller

JD admitted that he doesn’t donate paintings anymore, but this project caught his eye. He spent ten times more time and effort than he normally does on a painting. The idea? “Just wanted something would knock your eyeballs off!”

Rob House violin

Rob House’s “Savor the Maestro” focused on DSO conductor Jaap van Zweden, since Jaap was recently named Conductor of the Year. Rob had one of Jaap’s favorite piece, a Bach solo sonata for violins, applied to the violin, took quotes from Jaap and then added a baton. The finishing touch was Jaap’s autograph.

Anna-Sophia van Zweden, Jaap van Zweden, Paige Westhoff, Blaine Nelson

As the maestro made his way through the crowd with one of his fav gals, daughter Anna-Sophia, he reported he had never seen this painting of violins done before. Being a lover of the violin, he added that he liked the idea, “as long as the violins used are made for ‘show,’ and they’re not using violins that are made for actual playing.”

Violin chandelier

All too soon the doors of the ballroom opened with the handiwork of Junior Villanueva‘s Garden Gate in place. Highlight of the room was a wonderful chandelier of cut-out notes and violins.

Moonlight Dazzled In The New Dallas Country Club Digs For Ronald McDonald House’s Old Friends And New Dresses

Dallas Country Club entrance

Saturday was one of the first biggies to be held at the oh-so-new Dallas Country Club. To break the DCC in, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas’ 8th annual Moonlight Ball was the event.

Lessons to be learned about the DCC’s new digs:

  1. Unless you’re a member, you must enter the property on Mockingbird Lane, where you’ll be “met and gret” by a security gent. The Beverly Drive entrance is reserved “for members only.” Perhaps that means your car is washed while you’re golfing.
  2. DCC outdoor personnel have the most adorable uniforms. Security resembles Yellowstone forest rangers with their flat-brimmed hats and gracious welcome and directions. Valet parkers, regardless of the company, wear yellowish/beige vests and black driving caps. Don’t know that there’s a policy, but everyone seems to stand as erect as a Texas oil derrick.

In other words, once you enter the DCC wonderland, you almost feel like you’re a part of a high-end version of Disneyland with costumed characters who majored in hospitality.

Betty and Michael Bullington

To dress up the ballroom for its black-tie debut for 250 guests, Gala Chair Betty Bullington had Garden Gate’s Junior Villanueva created two types of centerpieces with spring flowers — tall silver vases and low-riding containers. Neither blocked the view of the room or the guest across the table.

Garden Gate floral arrangement

At the front of the room was a stage for Cuvee and, of course, a dance floor.

Dr. Dale and Jean Fuller

While the younger guests chatted in the reception area, Jean and Dr. Dale Fuller happily found their places at a table in the ballroom. Dale admitted that noise at event could be a bit challenging, so the empty ballroom was just right.

It’s hard to believe that it was back in the late 1980′s that Dale was president of Ronald McDonald House and was approached by the late barkeep Joe Miller. It seems that Joe’s patrons had thrown a party to help Joe with his battle against cancer. The lovable Canadian, who ran the media hangout bar on Lemmon Avenue, approached Dr. Dale about donating some of the money to a charity. Dale recommended RMHD. A year or two after Joe’s death, the RMHD decided to host a golf tournament in Joe’s honor. That golf tournament eventually became known as the Southwest Airlines LUV Classic and Party.

Mersina Stubbs

And while some honorary chairs simply smile and support events with funds and friends, Moonlight Gala Honorary Co-chair Mersina Stubbs’ influence extended beyond the usual. Betty said that she got her new yellow gown with a neatly placed slit (“I can’t remember who designed it”) from a boutique near Victory while shopping with Mersina. The two gals have been friends since their freshman year at SMU.

Phin Stubbs, Rod Einspanier and Nelson DeVega

While Betty and Mersina were checking the ballroom just one more time, husband Phin Stubbs was in the entry with buddies Rod Einspanier and Nelson DeVega.

Sponsors for the event are included following the jump: [Read more...]

Crystal Charity Ball’s 10.5 Best Dressed, Hall Of Fame Honoree, Honorary Chair And Oops Announced This A.M.

There are folks who think the Crystal Charity Ball’s Ten Best Dressed announcement reception is a stuffy occasion where teacups are held with little pinkies at 90-degree angles and propriety rules as though the British royals were in attendance.

Au contraire! The announcement is a fun affair that takes on the personality of the luncheon chair and the 10 fashion plates. This year’s announcement made earlier today at Neiman Marcus Downtown proved that the Crystal Charity Ball gals work hard as well as have fun in raising mega-bucks for children’s charities. No, NM VP/GM Shelle Sills did not roll out a kegger, and tattoos and piercing were as scant as snow flakes in Death Valley. But there was a light-hearted spirit and a true sense of esprit de corp about the whole event, which was like sipping a perfect glass of Dom Perignon with just the right person.

Scott Studenberg

Today’s announcement started with a reception held at the Commerce Street end of the second-floor couture salon. Lanvin’s Scott Studenberg in his oh-so-casual chic Lanvin menswear was the first hint that the day was not going to be a rigid button-down affair. The cute New Yorker admitted to being mighty impressed with Dallas women and their take on fashion.

Connie O’Neill

The rest of the crowd in attendance consisted of veteran and newbie CCB-ers including last year’s CCB chair Connie O’Neill, who simply sparkled. Ask her about her two puppies that arrived in the O’Neill household over the holidays and she’ll ramp up the sparkle meter. Connie even admitted that she had replaced her kids’ photos on her phone’s screensaver with puppies “Milly” and “Dorothy.”

Speaking of photos shown on phones, fashion show/luncheon chair Robyn Conlon whipped out her phone to show photos of her 17-month old grandson, who has already bonded with husband Don.

Charm bracelet

Across the way, Tricia Besing was the newest one to be dazzled by DeeDee Lee‘s weighs-more-than-an-iPad charm bracelet. Tricia admitted that she and sister Paige had had charm bracelets as youngsters, but had not kept up. However, DeeDee’s jangly wrist wear was giving her second thoughts of adding to her own collection.

But time was rushing. Many of the ladies had to head their heels over to the Hilton Anatole for the Linz Award luncheon honoring Erle Nye, which would start at 11:30.

OMG, it was already 10:50!

With NM cool, Shelle and lieutenant-in-charge of extra-special events Sandy Marple herded the 60 gals to the other end of the salon, where staging and chairs were set up for the announcement. Looking around, it became apparent that certain faces from the earlier crowd were now MIA. Perhaps they were in the powder room, or backstage preparing to be announced?

Tick, tick, tick. What was the delay? Everyone was seated. Yup, but they had to wait for the “gold man”– NM President of Specialty Retail Jim Gold, that is.

Just on cue he appeared and headed straight to his place on the side of the stage.

Shelle Sills addressing the audience for 10 Best Dressed

In typical Shelle style, the retailing maven of the downtown store welcomed the ladies and introduced Jim. The ladies politely applauded. That’s when the oops happened.

With an All-American smile and polished look, Jim took his place at the podium. Looking down at his notes, he looked up with confidence as Shelle and NM Corporate VP of PR Gabrielle de Papp smiled on the sidelines and Dallas socialites sat with perfect posture like happy schoolgirls in front of him.

“Good morning, everybody.” The ladies reciprocated with “Good morning” back to Jim.

No problem so far. . . and then it happened.

Jim Gold

“Well, we know spring is in the air when we have our uh. . . er. . . Ten Breast . . . Ten Best Dressed . . .” and the room exploded with laughter. Even the fellows working the audio in the back of the room perked up and looked around the room as if to say, “We couldn’t have bleeped that one.”

But Jim is not a man who blushes and is mortified. He recovered as perfectly as a Louboutin stiletto heel. . . right on point.

“Auspicious start. . . okay, let’s try again” and he did and carried it off perfectly. Think Hugh Jackman immediately joking after accidently riding a zip line into a lighting rig on the Oprah Show. It was an accident that endeared him to one and all.

After Jim introduced CCB Chair Aileen Pratt to the stage, he immediately went to Shelle to check on damage control. None needed.

Aileen thanked the NM crew for all their work. Then she announced that the “oldest and hottest couture house in Paris,” Lanvin, would be bringing their collection to Dallas for the September 6th luncheon and fashion show.

She also told of the perks that came with the Platinum Patron level — a seated dinner on August 29 at the Dallas Country Club and a cocktail buffet on the night before the show on September 5.

Aileen then introduced Robyn, who announced that for only the fourth time in the luncheon’s history there would be an honorary chair, and it would be Gene Jones. Heads spun around looking for the tall, slender brunette, but no luck. She was with husband Jerry at the NFL owners meeting. Don’t worry. She’ll be at the luncheon.

Before asking Shelle and Gabrielle up to the stage to announce the 10 BD’s, Robyn said she hoped everyone would buy tickets at the most expensive level. Laughter.

As Shelle handled the announcement of the 10BD and their dossier, Gabrielle presented them with gifts and found herself assisting some of the ladies on and off the stage. You see, those very fashionable tight skirts and high heels may get you on the best dressed list, but they’re murder in trying to climb up and down the platform.

Ellen Winspear, Pam Perella, Kim Miller, Pat McEvoy, Lynn McBee, Robyn Conlon, Lana Andrews, Aileen Pratt, DeeDee Lee, Ashley Tripplehorn Hunt, Tricia Besing, Nancy Carlson and Nancy Carter

It was an amazing group of ten including previous 10 BD members Tricia Besing, Nancy Carter, Pat McEvoy, Kim Miller, Pam Perella and Ellen Winspear, and new-kids-on-the-list Nancy Carlson, Ashley Tripplehorn Hunt, DeeDee Lee and Lynn McBee.

Very few in the audience were surprised at the accomplishments of the ten until Ashley’s name was read off. She was described as the member who would make the group ten-and-a-half. Ashley and her husband Ward are expecting a baby. How far along will she be in September? Eight months. Shelle calmly told the group not to worry about what’s she’s going to wear in the fashion presentation, because, “We have it all figured out.”

Still more laughter.

For the grand finale, Shelle introduced the Hall of Fame honoree — Lana Andrews. As Lana took her place on stage, Shelle advised her to stay put because Lana’s list of accomplishments was going to take some time.

Then it was time for the 10.5 BD plus Lana to be photographed with Scott, Jim, Aileen and Robyn, as others shopped or took off for the Anatole.

JUST IN: That-Wild-And-Crazy-Guy Steve Martin To Headline The 2013 Bishop’s Gala

The ink just dried on the contract for Steve Martin to headline the 2013 Bishop’s Gala on Saturday, February 2, at the Hilton Anatole benefiting Catholic Charities of Dallas. Born in Waco, Steve is more than a wild and crazy kind of guy. He’s an accomplished musician, author, art collector and actor.

As soon as more details are available, like who’s chairing, being honored, ticket sales, etc., we’ll let you know.

Martin Short (File photo)

Bit of trivia: Martin Short wowed the audience at this past Bishop’s Gala with his antics and professionalism. Interestingly Marty and Steve have not only made movies together (i.e. “Three Amigos,” “Father of the Bride,” etc.), they’re also good buddies.

Strong suggestion: Get tickets the minute they go on sale because Steve doesn’t go out on the road that often, so this should be a memory maker.

JUST IN: Crystal Charity Ball’s Ten Best Dressed For 2012 Just Announced

The Crystal Charity Ball committee just announced its 2012 Ten Best Dressed who will be honored on September 6 at Neiman Marcus Downtown with a luncheon and fashion show of the Lanvin Collection.

The TBD are Tricia Besing, Nancy Carlson, Nancy Carter, Ashley Tripplehorn Hunt, Dee Dee Lee, Lynn McBee, Pat McEvoy, Kim Miller, Pam Perella and Ellen Winspear.

Also announced was the 2012 Hall of Fame honoree — Lana Andrews.

CCB Fashion Show and Luncheon Chair Robyn Conlon also told the assembled group that for only the fourth time in CCB history, the luncheon will have an honorary chair — Gene Jones.

More to follow later on this morning’s announcement.

Have to dash to the Linz Award luncheon honoring Erle Nye.

Busy day for philanthropy and wonderful people in our community.
