Thursday, March 8: The annual Destiny Awards Luncheon benefiting St. Philip’s School and Community Center will have an old friend as the keynote speaker — Olympian Jackie Joyner Kersee.

Having been “a friend of St. Philip’s for more than a decade, Jackie said, “St. Philip’s students lead by example. I have always been impressed with the school ministry and their commitment to young people and our future leaders.”

In addition to Jackie, the luncheon at Belo Mansion will also be the occasion when the Destiny Awards will be presented to the following:

  • The Destiny Award for Organization — Forth Worth Avenue Development Group for its commitment to improving the West Commerce/Fort Worth Avenue corridor and maintaining a high quality of life for the area’s diverse residential neighborhoods and businesses.
  • The Destiny Award for Corporation — Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture for its numerous and effective integrated programs, including the Teachers Academy that for nearly 30 years has brought together teachers of all ethnicities and backgrounds for common study of diverse texts.
  • The Destiny Award for Individual LeadershipBarbara L. Watkins for tirelessly championing the rights for affordable and quality health care for all and possibility impacting the lives of many in her role as senior VP of Public Affairs/Patients Service for Parkland Hospital and through her involvement with such organizations as the Vogel Alcove, Girls Inc. and The Senior Source.
  • The Unsung Hero AwardRev. S.M. Wright II and Rev. Calvin Wright, whose leadership of the People Missionary Baptist Church in South Dallas has continued a legacy of bridge building between communities that began with their father S.M. Wright Sr., over 50 years ago.
